Interfaith Thanksgiving Service to be held at Temple Beit HaYam
STUART, Fla. — The Interfaith Alliance of the Treasure Coast is inviting the public to come together to demonstrate their solidarity with other faith groups at the third annual Interfaith Thanksgiving Service. Held from 4-6 p.m. on Sunday, Nov. 24, at Temple Beit HaYam, 951 SE Monterey Commons Blvd., the event also provides an opportunity for guests to express their gratitude and celebrate diversity.
“As we currently live in a world that is fraught with division and challenge, we hope that we can come together as one community to bring peace, harmony and togetherness as we embrace all faiths before our Thanksgiving celebrations,” said Rabbi Matthew Durbin. “As a wider-community, we are united by the values and strong ethics which propel us to be even greater human beings.”
The interfaith service will feature spiritual leaders from a wide variety of congregations leading different portions of the Interfaith Thanksgiving Service.
“Thanksgiving is celebrated throughout the United States by almost all religious and spiritual organizations,” said Durbin. “This is a great opportunity to come, share, celebrate, learn, and grow by experiencing a diverse variety of prayer and culture.”
Organizers feel that Thanksgiving is about hope and providing for those less fortunate than themselves and are requesting that guests bring a non-perishable item to be donated to House of Hope. Coffee and fellowship will follow.

Humane Society plans new “Homecoming” event
STUART, Fla. (Oct. 10, 2019) — The shelter animals at the Humane Society of the Treasure Coast will benefit soon from a brand new event that the nonprofit organization is planning. The “HSTC Homecoming” will be held from 7-10 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 16, 2019, at the Hutchinson Island Marriott Beach Resort & Marina, 555 NE Ocean Blvd, Stuart. Joyce Hewitt with Maronda Homes and Brightway Insurance-Vincent Zanfini Family Agency are the presenting sponsors.
The event is aimed at the younger generation and will cost $50 per person. Event organizers are encouraging those planning to attend to pre-register online at www.hstc1.org/Homecoming.
“That’s right, this is a formal ball in the fall, which many will identify with as a millennial dance party,” said HSTC Director of Community Outreach Courtney Zanetti. “This will be a night to remember, so arrive in style and prepare to break it down on the dance floor.”
Guests can capture their smiling faces at a photo booth, courtesy of attorney Mary K. Gilmour. A disc jockey will be spinning tunes from the mid 90s to the 2000s along with light bites and raffles. Some of the dogs that participate in the humane society’s pet therapy program, Misty’s Pals, will be on site to greet guests. And no homecoming event would be complete without the crowing of a king and a queen! However, there is a caveat.
Those who want to be in the running for king or queen must fundraise on behalf of the humane society by creating a personalized, online HSTC Homecoming fundraising page at https://p2p.onecause.com/hstchomecoming to share with their family and friends. All guests are encouraged to create a page, where they can state why they are committed to the HSTC’s cause. All funds raised from this event will directly benefit the shelter’s programs and animals to ensure their stay is as comfortable as possible until they find their “furrever” home.
The top male and female fundraisers will be crowned as such and will receive all of the “purrks” of their newfound royalty, which will include:
– Two tickets to the Pup Crawl (Aug. 2020)
– Two tickets to HSTC Homecoming (Nov. 2020)
– Their choice in naming rights for one animal in adoption
– One quarter-page ad in the Clawsmopawlitan, the keepsake program at the Paws & Claws 2020 Gala, to feature their pet or business
– One ticket to the Paws & Claws Gala on Feb. 22, 2020 (with a minimum of $500 raised)
For more information, contact Courtney Zanetti via email at czanetti@hstc1.org or by calling (772) 600-3211.

Humane Society of the Treasure Coast takes in animals from the Bahamas
PALM CITY, Fla. (Sept. 18, 2019) — In the wake of Hurricane Dorian, the Humane Society of the Treasure Coast (HSTC) is among the animal welfare organizations stepping up to take in the Bahamas Humane Society’s shelter pets to make room for the animals that were separated from their owners during the storm.
This week, the Bahamas Humane Society flew more than 145 cats and dogs from its shelter to the Ft. Lauderdale airport. Several HSTC staff members were there to greet them upon their arrival and transport them to their Palm City shelter.
The HSTC took in 12 cats and 12 dogs and nine other responsible shelters took in the remainder. The HSTC will be taking in more in the days and weeks that follow. Also, over the weekend, the HSTC helped coordinate the rescue of 40 cats and eight dogs from Marsh Harbour. This was part of Operation 300, one of the local groups providing Bahamas relief that the shelter supports.
“We’re part of a wider network of animal welfare organizations working to clear that shelter of its adoptable pets so that all of the displaced pets – like those 48 from Marsh Harbour in the Abaco Islands – can stay there to hopefully be reunited with their families on the island,” said HSTC President & CEO Frank Valente.
The University of Florida Shelter Medicine Program is advising receiving shelters and rescue groups to take special precautions to prevent the transmission of deadly viruses to other dogs in their care.
The HSTC is heeding this advice and ensuring that all resident dogs in its shelter or foster homes are properly vaccinated against distemper and parvovirus. Every dog from the Bahamas will receive at least two DAPP vaccines and the dogs will be quarantined and isolated from resident dogs for two weeks. They will be put up for adoption once they have been medically cleared.
“We cannot emphasize enough that if you are interested in fostering or adopting a Bahamas animal, please ask the organization you are getting the animal from what protocols they followed regarding isolation, quarantining and evaluating the health of the animal you plan to take into your home,” said Valente.
The HSTC will continue to be a part of a collaborative effort with leading shelters locally and in Florida, along with major national and international animal welfare organizations.
“All of the animals that we brought to our shelter have health issues, including all of the cats, which have ringworm, so in addition to the special two week quarantine we were already planning for these Bahamas pets, we will also need to treat the animals,” said Valente.
For those wishing to help, monetary donations are best to help provide veterinary care for these animals as they all have needs ranging from nutritional to medical treatments. The HSTC is accepting donations at www.hstc1.org/donate-emergency.
Support also may be provided by donating blankets, towels and flat sheets (pre-washed, if used); treats, enrichment toys and canned wet food for both dogs and cats; and non-clumping, fragrance-free cat litter. In addition, volunteer dog walkers are needed.
For more information, contact the Humane Society of the Treasure Coast at (772) 223-8822. To stay updated about relief efforts, as well as learn about how to support both locally and directly in the Bahamas, go online to www.hstc1.org/bahamas-relief.

Where Community Meets Creativity
— Grand Opening set for new business in Stuart
STUART, Fla. — A new business is coming to Stuart that offers the perfect place to incorporate creativity and play for both adults and children. Pinspiration, a craft studio concept complete with a wine and beer bar, will open its doors with a Grand Opening Party at 11 a.m. on Saturday, May 11, 1562 SE Federal Highway (in the same plaza as Stuart Bowl). The public is invited.
Studio tours will be offered along with 20 percent off craft project coupons, activities and entertainment for kids, free merchandise, and a chance to win a year of free crafting. There will be free crafts for kids during the grand opening and free champagne for adults while supplies last.
Pinspiration is a franchise that offers the trendiest do-it-yourself (DIY) craft projects from websites like Pinterest for customers of all ages. Longtime Stuart residents Lisa Brady and Sally Coyne are excited to bring this unique concept to the community. Brady’s daughter, Aina, will be managing the location.
“Pinspiration will be a place where people of all ages can have a blast making a project together, whether for a special occasion or just everyday fun,” said Coyne. “For those people who feel they’re not creative, Pinspiration is an opportunity to remove those doubts.”
As guests create, they can enjoy non-alcoholic beverages and for those 21 and older, wine, beer or mimosas will be available. The studio includes a “VIP Party Room,” where guests can host birthday parties, bachelorette parties, bridal showers, fundraisers, and other events and celebrations.
The Splatter Room, a feature of every Pinspiration studio, is a space where customers can create their own “Jackson-Pollock-inspired” splatter art. Guests suit up head-to-toe in protective gear, caps, and booties, then fling paint onto a canvas.
“The Splatter Room is one of our more unique attractions,” said Brady, who believes Pinspiration goes beyond an opportunity for guests to express their creativity. “Our intention is for Pinspiration to bring a new sense of community.”
Pinspiration will not only bring the community into the location to collaborate and create but the local business also will be very active at local festivals, craft shows, and events, and will support local organizations and charities.
“In our digital world, I think we often lose connection to ourselves and to each other,” said Brady. “Pinspiration is meant to merge community with creativity.”
Brooke Roe, an influencer in the arts and crafts space, founded Pinspiration and opened the first location in Phoenix, AZ, which has been a great success story.
“We operate much like a restaurant for DIY lovers,” said Roe. “You just come in, order a project you want to make from our list of options. Each person can select something different to work on at the same time. There’s no need to sign up for a class. You get a project kit, tutorials, and our staff, known as muses, who are there to help every step of the way.”

Bunfest will have guests and critters hopping with activities
STUART, Fla. – Bunnies are pets, too, and at the ninth annual Southeast Bunfest, it’s a day dedicated to rabbits, guinea pigs and the people who love them. The event, organized by the Humane Society of the Treasure Coast (HSTC), will be held from 10 a.m.-4 p.m. on Saturday, April 27, 2019 at the Kane Center, 900 SE Salerno Road, Stuart.
Special features of this one-day educational, family-fun event include a blessing of the rabbits, critter spa, bunny playground, adoptable critters, glamour photos, kids zone, raffles, silent auction, educational seminars and more. Admission is $5 for ages 11 and up and kids 10 and younger are free. All proceeds benefit the HSTC to help care for the small critters at its shelter.
“There is even an opportunity to fundraise on behalf of your beloved bunny, which is new this year,” said HSTC Animal Care Manager Sara Kornegay, who spearheaded this event from its inception and has been working with key volunteers Tracie Harris, Rosalie Goebel and Valerie Cucco in planning this year’s Bunfest.
Visit the HSTC website at www.hstc1.org/southeastbunfest to learn more about the new fundraising feature.
According to Kornegay, Bunfest is the largest event entirely dedicated to critters in the Southeast United States. This year, there will be more vendors than ever before with some traveling from as far as Nebraska and even Canada.
For those who wish to attend and are traveling with a critter, the HSTC has set aside a block of rooms at the Best Western in Stuart for their convenience. The discounted rates are applicable to rooms reserved for Friday, April 26, and Saturday, April 27. Call the Best Western front desk at (772) 287-6200 to make a reservation under “Bunfest.”
The HSTC thanks all of its Bunfest sponsors, which include the Renee Silvester Foundation, Stryker Electric & Air, Angler’s Landing Marina, Oxbow Animal Health, Leith Petworks, Treasure Coast Legal, and Safe & Sound Storage, along with the Smyth family for their sponsorship in memory of Ringo and in honor of their new additions to their rabbit warren, Jetson and Buster.
